Customize Your Windows 7 Start Menu Button
Windows users have been customizing their desktops in a variety of ways for years. Whether by downloadingthemes and backgrounds, or using third party applications to change more obscure settings like the default logon screen, many people seem intent on personalizing every aspect of their operating system to something that fits their individual taste. And what better to alter than an icon that's always visible?
How to Backup your Gmail Account
This past weekend over 150,000 Internet users woke up to find their Gmail inboxes, contacts and chat conversations gone. The issue, according to Google, was caused by a storage software update that introduced an unexpected bug. But while the company has since begun restoring data from tape backups and will likely offer some form of compensation where applicable, the incident served as a reminder that no matter how reliable some cloud-based services are, they are certainly not infallible, and thus it might be prudent to have your own backup ready just in case things go amiss.
Get Facebook's New Timeline Right Now
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg yesterday announced a complete reconceptualization of profile pages on the popular social network with the introduction of Timeline. As Zuckerberg puts it, Timeline is the story of your life.
Gone is the single column wall of posts with the most recent updates telling '15 minutes of your story.' Instead, as the name suggests, you'll see a timeline of life events containing photos and other updates that stretches back to when you joined Facebook. Anyone viewing it can click back to any year where there are updates and see what was going on.
Enable Concurrent Desktop Sessions in Windows
Professional and Ultimate editions of Windows come with a built in Remote Desktop (RDP) feature that allows you to access your machine remotely while away from home or the office. Unfortunately, it is limited by default to one concurrent user per session, meaning that if someone remotely connects to the computer, whoever was logged in at the moment will be automatically logged off, even if the user is physically at the computer.

AMD releases Catalyst 12.2 "pre-certified" driver
If you can't wait until the next official Catalyst build clears Microsoft's testing phase, AMD is offering a "pre-certified" version. Pre-release drivers are usually labeled as "preview," "beta" or even "hotfix" but apparently the "pre-certified" build is 100% final and merely awaiting Redmond's nod of approval.
As if things needed to be any more convoluted, a "Catalyst 12.3 release candidate" hit the Web earlier this week, which appears to contain the same driver (v8.95) as the 12.2 pre-certified version. We're not sure what to make of all that, but the bottom line is: there's a new early build for you to test drive:
How do you learn about breaking news?
How we learn about breaking news (world news, catastrophes, local happenings, etc.) has changed drastically over the past hundred years and even more so in the last decade. Scheduled print newspapers, once hailed as the most prominent source of news, have seen a steady decline in readership which was further accelerated by the growth of the Internet. Radio was once a popular medium to find out what’s happening in the world around you but again, popularity waned with the advent of television.
How often do you clean your computer?
As the resident “computer guy” for friends and family, it goes without saying that I’ve seen my fair share of PCs over the past 10 years or so. The majority of systems that find their way to me require a simple virus or malware scan to rectify the situation but every now and again I come across a computer that simply needs to be physically cleaned out with compressed air.

VLC 2.0 hits RC, brings new UI and Blu-ray support for OS X
Update: VLC 2.0 final for Windows and Mac OS X is now available for download.
Everyone's favorite open-source media player has reached a new milestone, delivering a bevy of new tweaks and features. The VLC 2.0 release candidate launched for Windows in late January and a Mac-friendly build has followed this week. The jump from v1.1.13 to v2.0.0 represents a drastic overhaul and the changelog contains nearly 17,000 characters -- more ground than we can cover here, naturally.
Unlike previous builds, the OS X version of VLC 2.0 has received plenty of attention. The player's dated skin has been replaced with a more modern-looking interface that merges your playlists, libraries and other such options into one column. Playback controls have been shifted to a bottom bar, while pop-up controls such as the audio equalizer appear in a translucent window so your content remains visible.
Microsoft reimagined logo for Windows 8 is official
Microsoft has revealed a redesigned logo for Windows 8 in a recent post on the company’s official Windows team blog. Redmond’s new operating system logo borrows heavily from the original Windows logo that was introduced alongside Windows 1.0 in 1985. Earlier this week we had pointed out the Windows logo was getting a Metro makeover, but the software giant just made it official today.
Sam Moreau, Principal Director of User Experience for Windows, notes that in addition to a complete reimagination of the Windows operating system, the team wanted to revise the existing Windows OS logo. Microsoft hired renowned design firm Pentagram to help with the project and it was during an early meeting with the firm that executives were presented with a very basic question.
